Adult Introductory Rowing

NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY

The Introductory (or Learn to Row) program is designed to provide individuals that have had little or no exposure to the sport (as well as those that have been away from it for an extended period) a comprehensive introduction to the skills they will need to become competent at propelling a rowing shell. Training will utilize indoor rowing machines during the initial stages of instruction before quickly progressing onto the water. Training will focus on general aerobic fitness and the development of a strong technical skill set. Training will focus on one person sculling shells for small groups or eight person rowing shells for large groups. Following the Introductory program, participants will have the option of pursuing the sport with Essex Rowing in either a recreational or competitive capacity alongside other rowers of comparable skill level and interest.

Adult Coxing

NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

If you were to compare the sport of rowing to horse racing, the rowers would be the horse and the coxswain (pronounced cox-ən) its jockey. The mechanics of the rowing stroke require the athletes to orient themselves in the boat opposite the direction they are traveling, with the only exception being the coxswain. When racing the coxswain is called upon to steer, make strategic decisions, and coordinate the actions of their crew. In practice the coxswain has the additional responsibility of serving as liaison between crew and coach, and ensuring the effective integration of practice plans. Coxswains are expected to demonstrate strong leadership and decision making skills, as well as the ability to communicate effectively in a variety of scenarios.

Individuals interested in pursuing this role may register below. There is no program tuition for adult coxswains though you will be responsible for all fees related to competition, which will be assessed on an event by event basis.

Experience coxswains should register for the Intermediate program option and new coxswains should register for the Introductory option.
